Track Trip to Kadoka
By Sierra Concha '13

After many cancelled track meets, the track team finally made their way to Kadoka yesterday morning for a meet. It was windy and cloudy throughout most of the day, and the meet was filled with schools from all over the state, including class B and AA schools. There was a wide variety of talent that arrived to race. Red Cloud students once again proved their skill by placing in multiple events.

The underclassmen have especially earned a good reputation due to their success in Kadoka. Dylan Tobacco ‘16 placed 3rd in the 1 mile race, Randy Hughes ‘15 placed 2nd in the 400 meter dash and 5th in the 200, Myriam Rama ‘15 placed 5th in the long jump and 6th in the 200, Augusta Terkildsen ‘15 placed 2nd in both the long jump and triple jump, and Jaime Richards ‘15  placed 4th in the long jump. A few upperclassmen placed in difficult events as well. Daniel Lucero ‘14 placed 2nd in both the 1 mile and 2 mile and Falcon Albers ‘13 placed 6th in the long jump.

Head Coach Nakina Mills was pleased with the results of Kadoka’s track meet despite the short season this year. “I think we’re doing great even with limited practices and the weather influencing our season,” she said. With only a few track meets left, the runners are training hard for the last chances to qualify for state. With hardly any time to train, Red Cloud students are determined to not let their season end at Regionals.

Ping Pong Club Takes Red Cloud by Storm
By Phillip Zimiga ‘13

Ping Pong Club is the newest club at Red Cloud High School and a real crowd pleaser, especially when Michael “Suds” Sunderland and Christian “Cmac” McGhee are going head to head.

The idea of Ping Pong Club originated during the fall senior retreat at Storm Mountain when some of the seniors played ping pong throughout the allotted free time. Michael Sunderland and Christian McGhee made it happen in the second semester. The club meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 in Suds' classroom.

Top student players include Dom Pilcher '13, Cully Pourier '13, Austin Big Crow '15, Tomo Shirataki '14, and Phillip Zimiga '13. Guest players have included teachers Matt Campbell, Pat McElwee, Ashley Boone, and alum James Knutson '12.

Ping pong is a good sport to play. It’s fun, and it’s also a good mental challenge.

Student Council Elections of 2013
By Sierra Concha '13

It’s that time of year again.

Posters have been filling up the hallway this week, especially in the freshmen halls. The freshmen have been showing the most interest so far in the upcoming election. There are currently eight students running for representatives: Bella New Holy, Koty Janis, Bobby Pourier, Brooke Ghost Bear, Davian Stands, Trista Merrival and Marley Kelly. With only a week to campaign, the freshmen have done an excellent job with competing. One freshman, Brooke Ghost Bear has mastered the art of providing incentives to her fellow classmates. This morning she had 20 breakfast burritos that she gave to students without any charge, and there are many cupcakes and cookies she will be giving to freshmen at lunch.

The sophomore class currently has three students running for junior representatives next year: Shania Janis, Carlee Janis and Josh Twiss. The campaigning and posters are scarce this year amongst the sophomores. The juniors running for senior class representatives are Kylie I’atala, Isaiah Eagleman, Christi Sioux Bob, Cece Two Lance, Jaycherie Little, Carrie Beard and Savannah Jensen.

The hardest position in Student Council is Executive Board. These students are in charge of the entire student body and events that involve all classes. The Executive Board organized a debate this past school year between the two candidates running for Tribal President, and presented the Tribal Office with difficult questions about the conditions of our reservation. So far only three students have embraced this challenge for next year: Myriam Rama, Brennon Merdock and Santianna Yellow Horse.

This is the last day for any sort of campaigning, so students have been very active in attempting to gain as many votes as possible. Elections will be held on Monday, April 29th during lunch in the commons.

Prom + Post-Prom = Fun

Prom+Post-Prom=Fun
By David LaDeaux '13

Prom was one of the last major memories for the class of 2013 before we graduate and move on from Red Cloud.

Prom was held on April 20th. Around 5:30 the show started with a feast of finger foods and at 6:30 Grand March kicked off with the guys lined up to the left of the gym and the ladies to the right. Next, many students took pictures and the actual dance started around 7:00. At the end of the night, post-prom took students to the Roosevelt Ice Arena in Rapid City. Students ice skated the night away before hitting up Denny's on the early morning trip home.

One of the highlights of prom was the announcing of royalty. All votes were in and everyone was excited to see what seniors would get King and Queen. The time came up and they started announcing Prince and Princess. Rhiannon White Eyes '14 was named Princess and Caine Goings '14 was named Prince of the junior class.

"It was surprising. I never thought I would get it," said Prince Goings. Next, it was time for King and Queen. Falcon Albers was named Prom King and Sierra Concha was voted Prom Queen. Concha was happy about how the prom went.  “I think they did really well in decorating and organizing prom and post-prom,” said Concha.

As a senior, prom couldn’t have been any better.

Shane Star and Stormy Williams Receive Gates

Shane Star and Stormy Williams Receive Gates
By Sierra Concha '13

This year 54,000 seniors across the nation applied for the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which is more than double the amount of past years' applicants. Out of eight eligible Red Cloud seniors, two incredible students received the scholarship: Shane Star and Stormy Williams. These students worked hard during the first semester on the intensive application and received the award with one life-changing letter.

Five students from Red Cloud had been selected as finalists, each one eagerly waiting for the months of March and April to hear the final news, and two finally received the package. During the waiting process, Star could hardly contain his nervous feeling. “I was anxious,” Star said. “I worked so much. It really helped having Suds’ class.” While waiting, he had been debating between two colleges to attend: University of Kansas or School Dakota School of Mines. Since he heard about the great news, he has been leaning towards University of Kansas. While explaining his plans for the future, his delight shone through his animated expressions. “I was so excited,” he exclaimed. “I couldn’t stop smiling.” Since his freshman year, he has maintained good grades. During his sophomore year, he rightfully earned a place on the Gold Honor Roll and remained on the list every semester since then. His skill in math is evident due to his most outstanding awards he received in both Geometry and Trigonometry. Star plans on majoring in either civil or mechanical engineering.

Stormy Williams discovered she received the scholarship a day after Shane. “I was in shock,” she said, reflecting on her first reaction to receiving the package. “I worked four months on it. It seemed like a long time.” She has been on Silver Honor Roll since freshman year and never fell below that. She continues to excel in both her English and Math AP classes this year. During her sophomore year, she received the most outstanding award in Speech class. Throughout high school she has been actively involved in extracurricular activities. She’s been a member of Hand Games and Dance Club all four years. Both clubs travel to multiple different pow-wows every year. During the winter season of her junior and senior years, Williams took a break from the clubs and became the girls’ basketball manager. She plans on studying pre-med, and is deciding between the University of New Mexico or Regis University.

The other students who didn’t receive the Gates Scholarship also have very bright futures ahead of them, with help of other scholarships and financial Aid. January Tobacco received the Native American Scholarship from Creighton University and has also been accepted to Stanford University. She has received financial aid which would cover most of the tuition cost at Stanford. Amanda Standing Bear has been accepted to many schools, but has been favoring the University of Notre Dame. She is a Horatio Alger Scholarship recipient. Mickie Hudspeth has received the Diversity Scholarship and financial aid from Augustana University, which is the college she will be attending this fall. Sierra Concha has decided to attend the University of New Mexico, where she received an in-state scholarship and financial aid to cover over half the cost of attending the college.

Red Cloud has many seniors going on a bright path filled with success. Good luck to the class of 2013 and their journeys after high school.

Give Blood, Save a Life
By Phillip Zimiga ‘13

Red Cloud students and faculty volunteered to give their blood to save lives last Friday in Eben Hall.

Sister Connie Schmidt of the Spiritual Formation Department organized the Blood Drive. The United Blood Services from Rapid City come to Red Cloud once in the fall and again in the spring.

27 students from the high school signed up to donate. Faculty members also donated- 58 people donated blood in all. “It’s a good day to answer the call to serve the greater community by donating blood,” said Sister Connie.

Sister Connie said she had received an email from the United Blood Service that because of the bombing in Boston, people should really donate blood to help people that had blood injuries.

Snow Showers Ends Spring Flowers
By David LaDeaux '13

We welcomed the spring season back with two snow storms right at the beginning of the new season. Most of the animals have returned to the spring homes, but because of the snow storms we have been set back on the best season of the year. “I think it's beautiful," said Philip Zimiga during a weather broadcast. The fresh coat of snow is keeping the Pine Ridge Reservation looking like a Winter Wonderland even as the season changed a few weeks ago on March 20th.

Some schools have had more two-hour late starts and snow days in these past few weeks than in the actual winter season, including Red Cloud. Now teachers have to figure a way to make up the missed assignments for the students. Spring weather should put winter behind it and kick it in gear. “I think it should be spring already. I'm tired of South Dakota’s bipolar weather,” stated senior Sierra Concha.

It's been snowing heavily in the past couple weeks- spring is starting to be the new winter. The seasons are getting themselves mixed up and no one knows why! But people tend to like the snow better than spring weather. “I like winter because its pretty and because Christmas is my favorite,” says Sierra Concha '13

Prom Night Approaches
By Sierra Concha '13

Prom is finally here.

The highly anticipated event will be held on Saturday, April 20th beginning at 5:30 pm. Dinner with family will begin at this time and continue until 6:30. The juniors have fund-raised and organized prom as they do every year. The theme is “Somewhere Only We Know.” It’s a fairy tale wonderland that the juniors have spent hours decorating on Sunday and every night this week so far.

The enjoyable experience doesn’t just end at  the Red Cloud Gym. Post-prom will be filled with excitement as they take a bus full of students to the ice skating rink in Rapid City. After spending time together in a chilly ice rink, the students will regain their energy eating Denny’s before they return home from an exciting night. Kylie I’atala ‘14 has participated heavily in planning for prom and is excited for Saturday. “The junior class worked really hard for it to look perfect,” she said. “We want it to look like ‘Someplace Only We Know.’”

The entire event will occur for 12 hours. This is one of the last major events of the school year. The DJ will be Red Cloud alumni Franklin Sioux Bob ‘11, who will light up the dance floor until 10:00pm. The juniors and seniors are thrilled that the biggest event of the year is coming.

The Red Cloud girls golf team kicked off their season on March 26th with a meet in Hot Springs. Leannah Vitalis '16 took sixth place with a score of 52. She was the top performer for Red Cloud.

The girls golf team includes Shania Janis '15, Koty Janis '15, Leannah Vitalis '16, Bella New Holy '16, and Payton Sierra '17.

Government teacher Patrick McElwee is the coach for the golf team. “The team is good so far. They're really young and not the most experienced team,” McElwee said. “But the first meet they did pretty well and they are going to improve a lot over the next few years.”

McElwee’s team practices mostly outside either at Red Cloud or at the Gordon golf course. Since the weather has been bad recently, McElwee was forced to conduct practice inside the school in his classroom. His team is now working on their chipping and putting skills.

The golf team's next meet will be Thursday in Spearfish.

Track Has Begun

 Track Has Begun
By Sierra Concha '13

Track season has kicked off to a great start. The team is somewhat scarce this year, but there are strong runners, throwers and jumpers showing their incredible potential already. State qualifiers have returned as well: Myriam Rama ‘15, Christi Sioux Bob ‘14, Sierra Concha ‘13 and Falcon Albers ‘13. There have only been two meets so far this season due to the weather, but Red Cloud has already shown the state what talent we have to bring to the track.

The first meet was at New Castle, Wyoming. The most recent meet was at Todd County, where students took home medals. Myriam Rama ‘15 placed 1st overall in the 200m race, 2nd in 100m race and 2nd in long jump. Gusti Terkildsen '15 placed 1st in the 300m hurdles, 5th in the 200m race, 1st in the triple jump and 3rd in the long jump as well.

Myriam Rama has been running distance events since 7th grade, but barely started sprinting this year. “It’s a big transition,” she said. “I’m starting to get used to it. I like it.” With only five more meets left until Regionals and State, there is a lot of pressure for the runners this year to return to State with strong times and lengths in jumping and throwing.

There are three coaches this season: Nakina Mills, Matt Rama and Tama I’atala. Many students have huge chances of qualifying for state this year and possibly breaking school records. It’s a hard sport, but runners like Rama ‘15 love it despite that. “I’ve been doing track forever so I think it’s pretty awesome,” she stated. We expect to hear more success stories as the season finishes its last five meets.

Snow Storm in April

Snow Storm in April
By David Ladeaux '13

During the last three days, western South Dakota was hit by a massive snow storm, leaving over 20 inches of snow in some places. Red Cloud School was closed for three days due to the record snow storm.

Not only Red Cloud but all Shannon County Schools and Pine Ridge, Little Wound and Rapid City schools were off for two to three days of school due to snow. As classes resume for the rest of us today, Wolf Creek School remained closed today because the roof over the middle school office caved in from all of the snow piled up on top.

Towns such as Rapid City, Pine Ridge and Kyle received over 22 inches of snow during the three day snow storm. “I was surprised that Red Cloud had three days off, but I enjoyed it," said senior Sierra Concha. Snow plows and sand trucks were out all night and day making sure the roads were safe for school bus travel and early morning workers. “It wasn’t a lot of fun for me because I had to shovel a lot of snow," said senior Phil Zimiga. "Shoveling snow is hard work.”

Seniors Bond for the Last Time
By Sierra Concha '13

Seniors are finally back in school this week after three full days of bonding and activities at their retreat at Storm Mountain from April 3rd to 5th. The retreat consisted of an ongoing kickball game, intense ping pong tournaments and incredible memories created.

“It was amazing,” Jasa Flanigan ‘13 said. “I loved bonding with my class.” Students shared laughter and tears as we strengthened our friendships amongst each other. Many students are grateful for this retreat, especially Dominic Pilcher ‘13 who discovered his new passion while on retreat. “My favorite part of retreat was playing ping pong,” he stated.  However, it wasn’t all fun and games. There was a prayer walk at Devil’s Tower that consumed most of Thursday. The class prayed together for the intimidating yet exciting future that lies ahead for the class of 2013.

The Senior retreat was unforgettable. In the midst of all the activities and laughter, the Seniors became a family.
