Welcome Back Josh Twiss!
By Jin Yup Jung '14
Red Cloud High School Wrestling traveled to Bennett Country on Friday night for the West River Conference Invitational. The team seemed a bit different tonight because our leader, junior Josh Twiss, came back to the mats after he was sidelined for about two months.
Twiss wrestled three times and won the first two by pins and by points for his last match. He wrestled really hard like he’d never wrestled before. Finally, his work paid off and he earned his bragging rights for leader on the team.
When Twiss stepped onto the mat for his first match, he had to wrestle Adam Hahn from Bennett County. This was the same opponent Twiss was wrestling when his thumb was injured at the Red Cloud Triangular. That was why his first match was most important for him.
“My first match was against a Bennett County guy," Twiss said. “He dislocated my thumb at the beginning of the season, which put me out for half of the season." Twiss was dominating him until the second period started and pinned him in the second period.
Twiss also won his second match easily; he pinned his enemy in the first period. “I wasn’t really nervous my second match because I knew I was going to handle him and beat him,” Twiss said. “However, my last match was bit harder for me to earn a pin because I won my first and second match by pins so I wasn’t really expecting much of a fight between him and I. After I took him down, I thought it would be over quickly, but I was wrong and it was a battle to the end. But I did great today and I’m ready for Red Cloud Tournament on Saturday.”
Coach Clay Leonard added, “It has been a hard time for Twiss since his thumb was dislocated, so he couldn’t wrestled for the half of the season. However, it was really great for him to win three matches in a row tonight, which will do great to recover his confidence.”
On Saturday, Red Cloud hosted its annual tournament, which was filled with lots of great wrestling and lots of great announcing. Stay tuned for the next wrestling article.
