Creighton Medical Students Visit Red Cloud
By David LaDeaux '13
Last month a few students from Creighton Medical school came to visit Red Cloud. While the students were here at our school, they taught us how to dissect the heart and brains of certain animals. The Creighton students taught seniors of the Advanced Biology class how to cut open fetal pigs and female sharks.
Teacher
David Waliser was one of many to get the chance to learn from the
students as they came to observe the class. They
taught us mostly about the human body and the different functions of how
the body catches breath from the heart as well as how the body
makes up for missing a beat. They also taught us how to count heart
pulses before and after moving very rapidly.
Two of the students stayed here at Red Cloud for a month to help teach us a little bit more about the human body and how to make proper dissections on different animals, including the fetal pig, a shark, frog, and the hearts and brains of sheep. “It was gross and the skin felt like paper” said Phillip Zimiga about the dissection of a frog.
In the Advanced Biology class, we had to do a project in which we had to dissect an animal in front of the 6th grade students. The Creighton students showed us where to and how to make the correct incisions and the parts of every animal. We hope they can make it back out next year to educate the students again.
