Crusaders Recognized at Shannon County Banquet
By Sierra Concha '13
On
May 6th, four prestigious Red Cloud students were selected to attend
the Shannon County Student Recognition Banquet. This banquet is designed
to applaud intelligent and active seniors and 8th graders across the
reservation. There are four categories with one student from each reservation school nominated. Christian Phelps ‘13 was chosen for Academics, Amanda Standing
Bear ‘13 for Citizenship, Falcon Albers ‘13 for Athletics and January
Tobacco ‘13 for Extra-curricular. Only one student is awarded for each
category after a panel reviews the tests and essays the nominated students submitted.
The banquet was held at Wolf Creek School where students brought family to enjoy a dinner followed by the award ceremony. Phelps was awarded the Academic Student Recognition Award. “It surprised me,” he stated. “There were two Gates recipients in the running and I thought they’d have gotten it.” This was a great honor for Red Cloud High School.
Albers also made Red Cloud proud due to his excellence in the athletics category. He was given the Athletics Shannon County Student Recognition Award. “I was honored and glad I got it,” Albers said. “It means a lot to me.” Both these students received a plaque, certificate, sweater and shirt.
There are also two more events at Red Cloud that will be awarding academically excellent students. Today at 2 PM there will be an Academic Assembly in the gym to honor top students in every class. On Wednesday night, Red Cloud will have their annual Awards Banquet in the cafeteria, where seniors will receive scholarships and students from all grades will receive certificates. New inductees into the National Honor Society will also be announced at this time.
