Track Has Begun
By Sierra Concha '13
Track
season has kicked off to a great start. The team is somewhat scarce
this year, but there are strong runners, throwers and jumpers showing
their incredible potential already. State qualifiers have returned as
well: Myriam Rama ‘15, Christi Sioux Bob ‘14, Sierra Concha ‘13 and
Falcon Albers ‘13. There have only been two meets so far this season due
to the weather, but Red Cloud has already shown the state what talent
we have to bring to the track.
The
first meet was at New Castle, Wyoming. The most recent meet was at Todd
County, where students took home medals. Myriam Rama ‘15 placed 1st
overall in the 200m race, 2nd in 100m race and 2nd in long jump. Gusti Terkildsen '15
placed 1st in the 300m hurdles, 5th in the 200m race, 1st in the triple
jump and 3rd in the long jump as well.
Myriam Rama has been running
distance events since 7th grade, but barely started sprinting this year.
“It’s a big transition,” she said. “I’m starting to get used to it. I
like it.” With only five more meets left until Regionals and State,
there is a lot of pressure for the runners this year to return to State
with strong times and lengths in jumping and throwing.
There are three coaches this season: Nakina Mills, Matt Rama and Tama I’atala. Many students have huge chances of qualifying for state this year and possibly breaking school records. It’s a hard sport, but runners like Rama ‘15 love it despite that. “I’ve been doing track forever so I think it’s pretty awesome,” she stated. We expect to hear more success stories as the season finishes its last five meets.
